How to clean your diamond jewelry

Diamonds may be forever — but they still need a little care to stay brilliant. Over time, everyday dirt, oils, and lotion buildup can dull your sparkle. The good news? You don’t need a professional cleaner to keep your diamond jewelry looking its best.

Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to clean your diamond rings, earrings, necklaces, and more — right at home.

What You’ll Need:

  • A small bowl of warm water

  • A few drops of mild dish soap

  • A soft toothbrush (baby toothbrushes work great)

  • A lint-free cloth or microfiber towel

How to Clean Your Diamond Jewelry:

Step 1: Soak It
Place your diamond jewelry in the bowl of warm, soapy water and let it soak for 15–20 minutes. This helps loosen dirt, lotion, and oils.

Step 2: Gently Brush
Using the soft toothbrush, gently scrub around the diamond, prongs, and setting. Focus on areas where grime tends to build up — under the stone and in crevices.

Tip: Be gentle! Don’t scrub too hard, especially around delicate prongs.

Step 3: Rinse Thoroughly
Rinse the piece under warm running water (plug the drain to be safe!). Make sure all soap is removed.

Step 4: Dry and Buff
Pat dry with a lint-free cloth and gently buff to bring back that shine.

What to Avoid:

  • Harsh chemicals like bleach or acetone — they can damage metals and dull the diamond.

  • Abrasive cleaners or brushes — they can scratch the surface.

  • Ultrasonic cleaners — unless approved by your jeweler, they can loosen stones in fragile settings.

How Often Should You Clean It?

  • At home: Every 2–4 weeks

  • Professional cleaning: Every 6–12 months for a deeper polish and setting check

Pro Care Tip:

Before cleaning, inspect your jewelry. If you notice a loose stone or bent prong, avoid brushing it and take it to a jeweler instead.
